Is it possible to add files or delete files from a wim image file.  I created an image deployed it and relised that I forgot some files that we put on every machine.  Wondered why the image seemed so small.  So I was wondering do I have to reimage a pc after I add the files or can I edit the image file

Thanks

Dan

You could off-line service that Image if it is a Vista Image. However, if its an XP Image I believe you'll have to re-create that guy.

Here is a KB article on Offline servicing...

You can modify WIM files all you want, even XP images.

I am still working on getting our windows xp installs done. Vista will probalby be used widespread next year but we have some homebuilt programs that will need to be redone to work with vista.

I kind of figured I would have to reimage but I was hoping somebody had figured out a way to edit these files like editing an ISO.

Seriously, if you clicked on the link you would see that you can easily modify ANY wim image. Just open a command prompt, go to your distribution\tools\x86 directory. Then type the following

imagex /mountrw F:\Distribution\Operating Systems\BuildName\WIMIMAGEFILE.WIM 1 C:\Mounted-Images

Where 1 is the number of the image in the WIM file, and c:\mounted-images is where you want the image to appear in your directory structure. When you are done, type the following to save your changes

imagex /unmount /commit c:\Mounted-Images

I'm sure you could automate that in a BAT file if you don't want to remember it.

Yeah, your were posting when I was typing my responce.  I have been looking at the technet pages and I can definetly use that to accomplish what I need to do.

Do you know if the technet pages can be downloaded somewhere?  Are they on the technet cd's that we receive here at work?  The info they have on those pages is great but I would like to be able to send it to our printshop and have it bound.  As long as it wouldn't violate any of there copyrights.  Printing them  all would take a while and I would like to have at least a few of those pages in my documentation.

thanks

Dan
